pl. Omayyads or Omayyades [ō mī′ə dēz΄, ō mī′yədēz΄] [after Omayya, great-grandfather of the first caliph in the dynasty]
any of a dynasty of caliphs who ruled at Damascus (A.D. 661-750), or of a related branch ruling in Spain (756-1031)
